at Louis Place presents
Steffani Jemison: Untitled (Stroke)

at Louis Place is pleased to announce an edition by New York-based artist Steffani Jemison.

First appearing in Jemison’s novella A Rock, A River, A Street, the images in the Stroke series are characteristic of Jemison’s longstanding drawing practice, in which acrylic paint interacts with a clear film support. “I am thinking about marks and how they collect on a surface,” Jemison has written. “I have accumulated marks, and I believe that this accumulation is at once a drawing, a text, and an archive.”

Like the word “stroke”—which simultaneously evokes a blow (as in the whack of a weapon), a mark (as in the movement of a pen on the page), a caress (as in the light touch of a parent or a lover), and a clot or rupture (as in the brain injury caused by loss of blood flow to the brain)—the Stroke drawings are graphic, somatic, and intimate. Generously sized at 24” x 16,” five works are available, each produced as an archival Giclée print on 100% cotton Canson Infinity Edition Etching Rag in a limited edition of 20 + 4AP.

Steffani Jemison is known for her work at the intersection of language and movement, including video, installation, performance, drawing, and writing. Her work is included in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Hirschorn Museum, among others; it is currently on view at the California African American Museum, the Stedelik Museum, and the Albright-Knox Museum. Jemison’s first novella A Rock, A River, A Street was described as “compulsively readable” by Publishers Weekly and “in a whole category of its own!” by an anonymous Amazon reviewer.

This limited edition is presented by at Louis Place, a liberatory community for writers. Founded in 2020, at Louis Place nourishes artists, activists, poets, novelists, scholars, and other writers through writing groups, peer exchange, generative workshops, and more. All proceeds from the sale of this edition directly support the 2023-2024 season.
