Untitled (Stroke 5)
24” x 16”
Ed. of 20 + 4AP
Archival Giclée print, signed

First appearing in Jemison’s novella A Rock, A River, A Street, Untitled (Stroke 5) is characteristic of Jemison’s longstanding drawing practice, in which acrylic paint interacts with a clear film support. “I am thinking about marks and how they collect on a surface,” Jemison has written. “I have accumulated marks, and I believe that this accumulation is at once a drawing, a text, and an archive.”

Like the word “stroke”—which simultaneously evokes a blow (as in the whack of a weapon), a mark (as in the movement of a pen on the page), a caress (as in the light touch of a parent or a lover), and a clot or rupture (as in the brain injury caused by loss of blood flow to the brain)—the Stroke drawings are graphic, somatic, and intimate. Untitled (Stroke 5) is produced as an archival Giclée print on 100% cotton Canson Infinity Edition Etching Rag in a limited edition of 20 + 4AP.
